Ballerina

Over a month. Yikes!

I really haven’t had a lot of time to draw, but found some time in the past week to start and complete this pic:

Ballerina

TIME: 5ish hours

MATERIALSS: 2H, HB, 6B, Kneaded Eraser

This was one of those pictures that you kind of dread starting because you aren’t really sure how you are going to go about doing it. I knew it would be cool/fun/challenging to do, and I really liked the picture of the dancer. Plus right now, I’m really liking the composition of drawing people, but without the face. I thought drawing a dancer or ballerina would fit into that category. I’m completely happy with the way it turned out. I won’t say its my best work, but it was fun and I appreciated the challenge.

The contrasts in the image were so dramatic, and I loved how obvious the light source was. Light source is so essential when drawing (or painting) and is something I’m always looking to improve. Sometimes it can be hard to identify, but in this case it wasn’t, and drawing the reflections & shadows was so beneficial to my “drawing experience”.

Plus I got to work with negative spaces and use the backdrop as a way to identify the dancer/ballerina so that was a new twist to my drawing I enjoyed 🙂

Hopefully it won’t be another month before my next drawing, but I make no promises. I do have 2 young kids.. time (and solitude) are rare resources around my house 😀

  1. This is so excellent! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  2. I really like the detail in the Tutu. You did well to give it the appearance of transparency.

  4. Wow! This is so good. I usually draw with just a number 2 pencil, but I love the way all the different shades look… so much more detailed!
